about the find:
This clipping from another book was taped to the first page of this book. It reads:‘For he insists that we must look at the world as it is, not as we would like it to be. His standpoint is that of Bishop Butler: “Things and actions are what they are, and the consequences of them will be what they will be. Why then should we wish to be deceived?”’

That one's a bit strange!by Hellen
I just can't figure out why anyone would do this. It beats me. Such a weird quote.
Maybe it was taped there by the "he" that the clip is talking about? Don't know.

Good find. Sure the quote is a brief comment on Butler's work, but it is the medium and not the message here that is interesting.
Was the owner of the book a devotee of his works? An ardent follower? Or were they so confused by the book that they had to put in a brief summary to help them stay focused on Butler's concepts?
Other things a "Things In Book[s]" made me consider:
-Bishop Butler's philosophy, it is interesting, and now on my to read list
-how popular he was in the late 50s and 60s, scholastically and to the lay
Good find.
