about the find:

Notice how the ink has left a ghostly echo on the next page from having been there so long.

I often wonder about inscriptions like this. About how the book ended up in my hands. Did Lyndon keep the book as a cherished possession? If so, was the book only passed on after his death? How old was Lyndon? I'm guessing Mervyn was an uncle and Lyndon a young nephew. Something like that makes sense I think.

Over 90 years old.

The last picture just shows how unevenly cut the pages are, I find that quite interesting too.

In The Children of the New Forest, Marryat describes the trials and triumphs of the four Beverley children, orphaned during the English Civil War and forced to take refuge with a poor woodsman in the New Forest. This is the first annotated edition of a great children's classic, which hasretained its popularity since 1847.
